Hey Bates Families! This week, we’re celebrating what makes our school the best place to be: Kindness. We have a full lineup of themed days to help us remember to look out for one another and spread some joy.
Check out the schedule below so you’re ready to celebrate:
🗓️ The Kindness Lineup:
Tuesday: "You’ve Got a Friend in Me" Day 🤠🚀
Grab your cowboy boots or space gear! Dress like your favorite Toy Story character to celebrate the power of friendship.
Wednesday: "Kindness is Warm & Cozy" Day ☕️🧸
Being kind gives us all the fuzzies. Wear your warmest pajamas or coziest clothes to school.
Thursday: Look For ways to show kindness 🍎🎒
Let’s look for ways to be kind by seeing things from a different perspective. Students dress like teachers, and teachers dress like students!
Friday: "Crazy About Kindness" Day 🤪
We’re ending the week strong with crazy hair or mismatched clothes.
"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
We can't wait to see everyone’s creativity on display. Let’s make it a week to remember at Bates!

📚 Staff Spotlight: Bates Reading Corner
We have a double feature today! 🌟 Our Reading Corner is shining a light on two wonderful educators and the stories that shaped their perspectives.
💙 Mrs. Sun: The Magic of the Everyday
Mrs. Sun’s favorite childhood story is "The Blue Bird" by M. Maeterlinck. She first discovered this enchanted journey when she was 8 or 9 years old and was immediately swept away by the mystery.
"The journey of the brother and sister searching for happiness felt almost enchanted to me," Mrs. Sun shares. "What stayed with me is the message that happiness is often already around us—in the people we love, in our home, and in the small, ordinary moments. It reminds me even now to notice the ‘blue bird’ of happiness in everyday life."
✨ Mrs. Okelberry: A Lesson in Perspective
For Mrs. Okelberry, "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli was a book that grew with her. She first read it in 6th grade and thought it was "just okay," but a second read in 9th grade changed everything.
"I came to really love the characters and seeing their different perspectives," Mrs. Okelberry says. "It is a great book to show how we can influence friends and sometimes try to change them in ways that isn't always for the best."
Whether it’s finding magic in the ordinary or learning to appreciate what makes us unique, these books have a special place on our shelves!

"I am not here," said Toad. 🐸🐌
Thoday, we are taking a trip down memory lane with Mrs. Young! Her favorite childhood picks are the ultimate classics of friendship and cozy adventures.
Mrs. Young fell in love with Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel and Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik when she was just five years old. These were the stories that helped spark her imagination and her love for reading at the very start of her school journey!
Whether it’s Toad waiting for a letter or Little Bear going to the moon in a cardboard box, these books remind us that the best stories are the ones we share with friends.
You look for these books and more at our school library.

The wait is over! It’s time to find your next favorite story. Whether you’re looking for the latest graphic novel, a thrilling mystery, or some cool new school supplies, we’ve got it all waiting for you.

"Don't turn the page!!" 🚫📖
Today in our Staff Favorites Reading Corner, we are featuring a true childhood classic chosen by Mrs. Drake: The Monster at the End of This Book.
For Mrs. Drake, this book wasn't just about the lovable, furry old Grover—it was about the memories made with her dad. Back when she was in 1st Grade, she and her father would sit down to read it together.
"My dad was the absolute best at reading this book," Mrs. Drake shares. "He would read it in his best Grover voice and make it seem so incredibly hard to turn the pages. It was our special way to connect, and even at that age, I loved the humor of it!"
Whether it's building paper "walls" like Grover or just sharing a laugh, stories like these remind us that a book is more than just words on a page—it's a core memory in the making.
By 3rd grade, everything changed when her teacher, Mrs. Rigby, pulled out "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls.
"I fell in love with Old Dan and Little Ann," Mrs. Drake recalls. "I remember 'Teacher Read' being the best part of my day. I laughed and rejoiced with Billy Coleman, but I also shed many tears. Seeing Mrs. Rigby cry as she read showed me it was okay to feel sadness and empathy for others."
✨ From Reader to Teacher
For Mrs. Drake, these two stories were the spark. Where the Red Fern Grows was the book that made her want to be a reader for life—and ultimately, it’s what inspired her to become a teacher. To this day, she can’t read it without a few tears!
You can look for these books and more at our school library.

We officially hit the 100-day mark last Friday, and what a journey it’s been. From conquered math problems to new friendships, these students have put in the work. 🍎📚

Do you ever wonder what books made your teachers laugh out loud or stay up late with a flashlight?
Mrs. Koer's favorite childhood book was "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" by Beverly Cleary. When she was 8 years old she loved to read about Ralph the mouse and his fun adventures.
Mrs. Wallace's favorite childhood book was "Oh The Places You Will Go." by Dr. Seuss. She I can't remember how old I was when this book came out but I she remembers loving it. Her teacher talked about the message of the book and I knew that she could do anything she wanted if she just tried.
These books and many more are available in our school library.

Shadow or Sunshine? Groundhog Day at Bates!
The results are in, and the Bates Elementary student body has spoken!

58% of Bates Students are ready for an early spring (No shadow in sight! 🌷)
It looks like the majority of our Bison are dreaming of warmer weather and recess without the coats!
