January Newsletter 2017
Welcome, 2017! We are looking forward to a new year and all of the exciting adventures and learning experiences we will enjoy together here at Bates! We just finished a beautiful holiday season and hope that you were able to cherish the moments of the season with your families and friends. Thank you for your generous donations during December Coins for Christmas. It was a huge success. Because of your generosity, many Bates families were able to enjoy a very special Christmas. Regardless of the commercialism that accompanies this time of year, we enjoyed the spirit of joy and sharing at Bates Elementary! A big thanks goes out to our student council, Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Kotter, who are our student council leaders, and Mrs. Ramage, our school counselor, for their help in organizing our donation drive. THANK YOU!
We are also starting our spring choir at the end of this month. If you are interested in having your child sign up, applications will be in the office. They will practice on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7:30 AM. We will also be starting a band for our 5th and 6th grade students. This will be starting on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the North Ogden Junior High band room #301. They will practice on Mondays at 3:30-4:30 and Wednesdays at 2:40-3:30.
On Monday, January 23, 2017, from 5:00 to 10:00 pm, Arctic Circle will be hosting a family night. If you mention that you are from Bates we will receive 10% of the sales. We would like to thank all of you who have been saving your Box Tops for education! Heather Bradford does a wonderful job in organizing this program for our school. Every little bit of money helps our students in so many ways. Remember to ask neighbors and relatives to save theirs also!
I would like to invite any parents interested in attending our Community Council meeting to come and join us on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 3:00 pm. This meeting will be held in our Art room # 302. This is an opportunity for you to be able to observe or give input on how Trustlands should be spent at our school.
We look forward to meeting with parents and students during our parent teacher conferences, which will be held February 1st – 3rd. We will be hosting a blood drive on Thursday, February 2nd from 1:00-5:30 pm. They will be set up at the front of the school in a blood mobile. If you are willing and able to donate, please stop by.
Thanks to all of you who are reading with your children each night for at least 20 minutes! Our 40 book challenge has been going well. We have some students who have already read over 40 books and we are challenging them to go for 50. We have sent one book per family of My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George with your children. We hope you found time over the break to start reading this book together as a family. We will be holding a literacy club on Wednesday, January 18th and 25th and then again on February 8th and 22nd in our library. Our Literacy Night will be on Monday, February 27th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Bates. More information will be coming home on this. We will also be holding our Math Club this month on Wednesdays, January 11th and 25th and then again on February 8th and 22nd in the lunch room.
Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, January 28, 2017. It is the year of the rooster. We will be celebrating this year at Weber High School on Monday, January 30, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We would like to invite all Bates family members to take part in this fun celebration. More information will be coming home throughout the month.
It’s hard to believe that January marks the half-way mark for this school year! Lots of events and activities are coming up, so please take note of the items listed on the calendar. If you have a student in 6th grade, please pay close attention to 7th grade registration dates. What an exciting time for our 6th graders! A new year often brings a stronger commitment to resolutions and goals. Let’s make this our best year ever!
